Panel Interivews: The Good, The Awkward and The Surprisingly Insightful

We recently asked our candidates what their experience has been with panel interviews - and let's just say, the responses were both eye-opening and, at times, very relatable. From awkward silences to “did I just answer the wrong question?” moments, the feedback was candid, real and full of lessons - for both candidates and panel members alike.
Whether you’re gearing up to face a semi-circle of strangers with clipboards or you're one of those clipboard-holding folks yourself, lessons can be learned.
Lessons for Candidates: It’s Okay to Feel Ever so Slightly... Terrified
The number one feeling reported by candidates? Overwhelm and intimidation. The good news? You’re not alone - and there are ways to manage those jitters.
Here’s what can help:
- Breathe: Sounds obvious, but many candidates confessed to holding their breath without even realising it. Oxygen = clarity. Clarity = better answers. Simple science.
- Pause: A small pause in between the question and your answer will give you a moment to think and show your audience you are genuinely considering your answer.
- Preparation is your Superpower: Candidates shared that answering questions under pressure was tough, especially when panel members interjected or layered on follow-ups. One word: STAR - Structure your answers using the Situation, Task, Action, Result framework. Not only does it help you stay on track, but it gives the panel a clear view of your awesomeness.
- Make it relevant: Don’t just tell your career story - connect the dots for them. Highlight how your past experience aligns with this role at their organisation. That’s where the magic happens.
Lessons for Panel Members: You’re Being Interviewed Too.
Here’s a plot twist: the candidate isn’t the only one being evaluated. Candidates are looking at you to get a feel for the culture, values and overall vibe of your organisation.
How to make a great impression:
- Create a Human Experience. Interviews don’t need to feel like interrogations. Keep things conversational, warm and inclusive. You’re not just vetting talent - you’re showcasing your organisation.
- Ditch the Script (a little). We get it - scripted questions help keep things on track and ensure fairness. But when used rigidly, they can make the interview feel robotic. Use them as a guide but leave room for natural conversation and genuine curiosity.
- Consider the Power of Presence. One candidate told us, “It felt like three people were firing questions at me, while one stared blankly in silence.” Be engaging. Smile. Nod. React. Remember: panel interviews aren’t just about what’s asked - they’re also about what’s felt.
In Summary
Panel interviews can be intense, but they don’t have to feel like an episode of Shark Tank. With the right preparation on both sides of the table, they can be insightful, even enjoyable experiences that help great candidates and great organisations find their perfect match.
So, whether you're the one sweating in the hot seat or the one scribbling notes, remember: the goal is connection - not perfection.
