A strong CV does more than list job titles, company names and employment dates.

It tells a story about your experience, your environment and the scale of the work you’ve been trusted to do.

One of the most effective - yet often overlooked - ways to strengthen a CV is by including a short line or two describing the companies you have worked for.

Why You Should Include a Brief Description of the Companies You’ve Worked for on Your CV.

This simple addition provides valuable context for the reader and helps them quickly understand the significance of your role.

It Provides Immediate Context

Not every recruiter or hiring manager will be familiar with the organisations on your CV.

Even well-known companies may operate in specialised industries that aren’t universally recognised.

Including a brief description such as the company’s industry, size or focus helps readers quickly understand the environment in which you worked.

It shows a level of consideration, which does not 'assume' your reader has intimate knowledge of all of your previous employers.

For example:

“ABC Technologies – A national software company specialising in cloud-based financial platforms with over 500 employees across Australia.”

In one sentence, the reader now understands the scale and sector of the organisation.

It Demonstrates the Level You Operate At

Context helps employers gauge the complexity and scope of your responsibilities.

Managing a team of 10 people in a multinational corporation can be very different from leading a team of 10 in a small startup.

By explaining the organisation briefly, you allow employers to better interpret your achievements and responsibilities.

It Highlights Industry Relevance

Employers often look for candidates who understand their industry.

A short company description helps highlight relevant sector experience immediately.

For example, stating that a company operates in healthcare technology, renewable energy, financial services or government advisory instantly signals industry alignment.

It Shows Strategic Awareness

Including company descriptions demonstrates that you understand how to present your experience in a meaningful way.

It keeps the reader focused on your CV and makes understanding your relevance/suitability for the opportunity in question, easier.

You do not want your reader to become distracted by a Goggle search of what a particular company does – as this may take them down an internet ‘rabbit hole’, which has no relevance to or impedes your application.

This level of thoughtfulness is particularly valuable for mid-career and executive candidates.

It Helps Your CV Stand Out

Recruiters often review dozens, sometimes hundreds, of CVs.

When a CV clearly explains your previous/current role and the organisation, it becomes easier to read and more engaging.

Small details that improve clarity can make a significant difference in how your application is received.

How to Do It Well

Keep the description concise - one or two lines are enough.

Focus on:

  • Industry or sector
  • Size or scale of the organisation
  • Key service, product or focus area

For example:

“XYZ Advisory – A boutique executive search firm specialising in leadership appointments across government and the health sector.”

Your CV is not just a list of positions - itis a narrative of your professional experience.

By including a brief description of the organisations you’ve worked for, you provide context, demonstrate strategic thinking and make it easier for employers to recognise the value of your experience.

Sometimes, the smallest additions can have the biggest impact.
